I picked a monolgue from Macbeth
Monday: We had all decided on which monolgues we were to do but we still hadn't learnt any of ours. The teacher got us all to get up and speak our monolgues out to different parts of the room and whenever he said an emotion we would change the mannerism in which we were to say out monolgues. Then he got us to get up one by on and recite the first 4 lines of our monolgues and say them in different emotions
In Sharons lesson my group and I discussed which play we were to perform next monday and it had to be one of Peter gills as it was meant to continue on from the presentations we did.
Tuesday
Sharons lesson:
Continued to discuss which monolgues we were to do
wednesday: Sharons lesson we still continued to discuss what we were to do
Thursday: We finally decided on the scene we wanted to perform and we began to just read from the script and do the scene just by site reading, by doing this we helped each other learn what was going on in the scene and we developed a strong team foundation.
In Rob's lesson we looked at the Monolgues again and read them out to everyone else in the group. As no one had learnt their monolgues yet it was quite a hard task to try to embody the character as we are reading the monolgues and everyone had little to no understanding of what their monolgue was about.
Monday
In this lesson we got into groups and read our monolgues to each other. Then we read the first few lines of our monolgues and our partner told us to put an emotion of choice into the monolgue, and this was quite a fun and sometimes a hard challenge depending on what the emotion was. Then we did this in front of the class. I loved this exercise because it developed my confidence to do a piece of drama in front of a group of people without any plan beforehand. This pressure gave me more confidence improved me. After this were then sent away to learn our monolgues. My strategy for learning the monologue is one that I had found on the internet which was writing the first letter of each line on paper next to one another. This technique will help trigger your memory and in turn help you to memorise more lines in a shorter more satisfactory amount of time.
WHERE AM I
At this moment I am quite proud of the progress I have made throughout the first year at college, and I feel as though I am moving in a positive direction in terms of my new variety of acting techniques, my inner confidence coming out, and my potential to not only lead, but to work in balance with the rest of the group in order to achieve our goals as an ensemble. I have achieved the learning of these techniques through repetition in class by doing improvisations and by listening to the constant advice my teachers bestow upon me and my peers. I would love to play bigger roles in upcoming productions as I feel I am ready to take on much more challenging roles. I believe that through my work learning a range of techniques from Stanislavski to opening up to the crowd( R&J workshops), look up at the audience when speaking to them, and stage blocking have really taken my acting in theatre to the next level. I hope that over the upcoming months I can, along side my teachers, can continue to push myself outside my comfort zone and break through any limitations I set myself as I've learnt that I can accomplish what I want when I want, with the correct guidance (my teachers) and with my will power. I believe that my view on life has really made a paradigm shift and by engaging in more plays and going out into the world and breaking out of the shell I created for myself in my childhood I have/will continue to flourish as a person and become much more resilient. Although I have become aware that acting is almost about becoming vulnerable and becoming comfortable about that, I feel as though I am slowly moving towards that state. I do know that I am still young and that I have years ahead of me to improve if I allow it by being open minded, I feel as though this course has been especially useful in terms of building upon a strong foundation. I am still working on my ability to not care what others think about me in terms of when I act and a judgmental audience and I hope I can achieve this state in the upcoming terms.
Beyond this course I hope that I can go to an acting school and start to learn how to network and be smart about it. I have learnt that networking and contacts are very important and that these are the qualities needed to get signed by agents and to get as many opportunities as possible. I aim to achieve this by constantly seeking advice from actors around me who have tried to constantly be in the scene, and hopefully from their advice I can learn from their mistakes and use their knowledge as a compass to guide me towards my own goals. I also aim to dedicate most my free time to seeking new stage techniques and to find work so I can build up discipline and also become even more confident in myself. With the age of information I believe that I can utilize social media and use it to my advantage to develop contacts and to get advice from some of the greatest actors.
ASSESSMENT ON MONOLOGUE
I performed my monologue today. I had picked MacBeth 'To be thus is nothing' because I found that I really resonate with the character because he has a friend who has lots of potential power who could use it in the wrong way, and during secondary school I found myself in almost the exact same position, minus the thoughts of killing them. I also liked the difficulty I would face doing this Monologue as I had not even seen Macbeth, or had much knowledge of the play at all before I picked it., and so in a way I wanted to put myself under pressure and challenge myself as in the acting industry I may engage in activities that require that much pressure. Therefore it was really to train myself and become more disciplined too. Under all that pressure I did manage to pull through as I quickly studied the play, learnt more about the monologue I was to perform and I had even watched several monolgues of it done in the past. When learning the Monolgue and home and college I made sure to become the character, which I had learnt later was actually not the best idea as I will explain. I practiced the monologue by saying in all different kinds of fashions, as in one time I said it as if I was happy and another as if I was sad so I could venture through the different emotions I have a learn to release them when acting. I also walked around whispering the monologue to myself a fair lot which made people around me on busses think I was insane, but that alone gave me more confidence.
Eventually I knew I was ready and so I brought my monologue into the drama studio and performed it to my teacher. My friend was filming too but throughout my experiences I've had so far in this course. Eventually I performed it and time went very fast as I did. For the first time I actually walked into an assessment with complete confidence and no anxiety which is a great step for me in my path. He told me that my monologue was great and that everything from the energy to articulation was good, although the one thing I should do in future is make my character more like Abe. He wanted me to put more of my own twist and personality into it so it was just any old monologue which my mind completely skipped over as I rehearsed. The whole process was enjoyable and I hope I get to do this again.
